A few resources on academic-to-trade press publishing
It's not just me; lots of people talk about it
I’ve written a few pieces about this subject, but there are lots of other good resources. Here are a few that I like:
Laura Portwood-Stacer has a long piece on "Trade Publishing for Scholarly Authors."
This Harvard Club’s roundtable on moving "From Dissertation to Book" features remarks from Elizabeth Knoll (Harvard University Press) and Philip Laughlin (MIT Press), and professors Erez Manela and Peter Der Manuelian.
Rebecca Colesworthy maps the ways academic publishing has changed in parallel with teaching; she also has a series in the Chronicle of Higher Education that talks about myths of publishing, book contracts, and writing timely books.
Stephen Andes, who wrote Zorro’s Shadow, explains "How I Went From Academic to Agented Author."
Here are copies of my proposals for Rest (PDF) and Shorter (PDF).
